    Customer Questions

All questions answered by probiotic experts Dr Kate Stephens PhD (Food and Microbial Sciences) BSc(Hons) Medical Microbiology and Kerry Beeson BSc (Nut. Med.) Nutritional Therapist.

Is it OK to take friendly bacteria every day?

Yes, it is safe, and often advisable, to take a daily high-strength friendly bacteria supplement. Good bacteria only colonise in the gut for a few weeks and research1,2,3 suggests that taking regular digestive supplements helps to complement the gut microbiome.

When, and how, should I take live cultures?

“What time should I take friendly bacteria supplements?” and “Should I take live cultures with or without food?” are common questions, especially when taking high strength live cultures. It’s best to take your friendly bacteria at breakfast time, as this is when stomach acidity is at its most neutral. Taking them with food further helps to buffer the acid and assist the passage of the live cultures into the gut. If you miss breakfast, just take them with another meal or snack.

How long should you take friendly bacteria for?

You can choose to take specific strains at certain times, for example during pregnancy, with and after antibiotics, or during the winter flu season. However, many people feel better when taking daily high-strength live cultures, to complement their natural gut bacteria.  Research (1,3) suggests that ongoing daily use is fine, with no risk of dependency.

How do I choose the best friendly bacteria for adults?

Choose well-researched, shelf-stable friendly bacteria supplements, guaranteed to reach the gut alive and containing strains researched for your needs. Consider if you want a high strength supplement, or one with added fibre. Read customer reviews to help you decide. For example, Optibac Every Day EXTRA is a high-strength supplement without added FOS, so is a popular choice for adults with IBS.

What strength of live cultures should I take?

With live cultures, ‘more’ is not always ‘better’, though some people do better on high-strength friendly bacteria supplements. But it’s still important to choose high strength live cultures with strains featured in multiple gold standard clinical trials, where the research is relevant to your needs. High strength supplements like Optibac Every Day EXTRA4,5 contain the same number of billions used in supporting clinical trials.

What strength should a friendly bacteria supplement be?

When choosing a live cultures supplement, remember that high strength does not always mean high quality.

Rather than looking at the number of billions, it is far more important to look at the good bacteria strains it contains. It is best to choose a supplement containing high-quality strains which have been used in gold standard clinical trials. High-quality supplements will typically contain the same number of billions used in the clinical trials; sometimes lower doses perform just as well as high doses1 so it is not worth paying extra for more billions than you need.

However, some people do better on a higher dose, and it is fine to experiment and increase the dose of any of our products; ultimately it all depends on your individual needs and responses to the supplement.

Can a good bacteria supplement be too high strength?

The human gut is home to roughly 100 trillion bacteria, so the amount contained in even our highest strength live cultures supplements (75 billion) is comparatively small. Many people take several of our supplements at the same time, depending on their individual needs and requirements. We’re all individual, however, so if you tend to be sensitive to new foods and supplements, sometimes it’s best to introduce them gradually. If you want to start with half a dose initially, then our live cultures capsules can be opened, and the contents taken alone.

Following the taxonomic updates published in April 2020, a reclassification has been proposed for the L. paracasei species, and the paracasei strain in Every Day EXTRA may therefore now also be known as Lacticaseibacillus paracasei subsp. paracasei Lpc-37®, or still indeed as L. paracasei Lpc-37® for short.

    • I wasn't sure whether to choose Every Day Extra or Max having tried the basic which helped sooth the system a bit but not as much as I would like. I emailed the advice team and received a thorough and helpful reply in which the pros and cons of each was pointed out. I have gone for Extra which has helped a lot.
