What we choose to put into our bodies each morning can really set the tone for the rest of the day. Take a moment to nourish your gut, brain and immune health with expert-approved breakfast topping ideas you can easily mix and match to elevate and supercharge a standard bowl of porridge. We've got you covered with three quick and easy combinations that taste seriously good.
Breakfast is especially important to us, as that's the best time to take your friendly bacteria supplements, too!
Sweet, warming or spicy: our experts’ top taste combinations
Stewed apples, almonds and chia seeds - sweet, comforting and wholesome
Turmeric, dates and honey (plus a pinch of black pepper and olive oil) - warms you from the inside out
Ginger, cinnamon, chopped nuts, blueberries and raw maple syrup - to spice up your morning
The science behind each topping
Turmeric - contains immune-boosting and antiviral properties. Heat yours up in a warm bowl of porridge with your favourite oil and a pinch of black pepper, to activate it and better absorb the goodness
Dates - these are excellent natural sweeteners and are also high in fibre
Honey - good-quality honey contains antioxidants and may help lower cholesterol levels
Stewed apples - filled with vitamin C and potassium, plus, when stewed, the apples release a special form of gut-healing fibre called pectin that can reduce inflammation and remove toxins
Ground almonds - keep you feeling fuller for longer and can help support mood and energy levels
Chia seeds - packed full of omega-3 fatty acids to support brain and heart health. Pop them into your porridge before cooking with your choice of milk, as the absorption makes them easier to digest
Blueberries - these delicious berries contain polyphenols to help boost immunity, plus they’re great brain food! Adding them frozen is also a great option for warmer days
Cinnamon - this warming spice helps fight bad gut bacteria and stabilises your blood sugar
Ginger - grating fresh ginger into porridge gives a tasty kick, is great for your immune system and helps ease inflammation
Raw maple syrup - raw organic maple syrup is a great alternative to sugar and sweeteners, is high in antioxidants and can be anti-inflammatory
So why not try one, or all three, of these delicious breakfasts that will boost your body and your brain? Or mix and match these delicious toppings to create your own boosting breakfast recipe!
